Beauty By the Sea

What do you get when you add one beautiful family and one incredible day at the beach? Lots of amazing photos full of love and laughter. We had to wait out two weeks of rainy Los Angeles days, but we finally got one perfect day.Paradise Cove has always been one of my own favorite beaches to go with my son. It is a calm spot with lots of tide pools and places to investigate. Cristi and Mark conawaymurphy_lmajor-265-copybrought a great blue bunch of balloons and Cocoa and Miles had a blast running on the beach with them.  Cristi and Cocoa have the most amazing blue eyes ever and the sea just brought them out. There are so many moments of love and laughter you can tell this is a loving family. I loved it that Cocoa and Miles both gave me hugs before I left!

Courage

I love people with courage.  There are so many kinds of courage. The woman who finds the courage to protect her child, the courage not to retaliate…The courage to lead an honest life..The nuances of the thing intrigue me. There are men who can climb a mountain, but can’t be honest about who they are…There is the bold courage of fighters going in the ring, and then the quiet courage of those who fight for the poor. It’s a thing I respect and  I am always amazed at the depths we possess it……randycouture_landrymajor-3178 when we least expect it.

Freddie Roach

freddieroche_landrymajor-7992weI first met Freddie Roach when I went to his Wild Card Gym to photograph MMA fighter Andrei Arlovski. Freddie was the boxing coach on Andrei’s dream team. I was taken by many aspects of Freddie. He is not what you would expect for the trainer to champions like Manny Pacquiao, Mike Tyson and Oscar de la Hoya. Freddie is a small quiet man with his black rimmed glasses. He got in the ring to train Andrei and became a focused laser to get his fighter to punch harder and not hesitate for a second. I knew I wanted to do a portrait of Freddie. I love the back wall in his gym, the private place where fighters train. It is tagged with Wild Card in great graphics. I knew that first day I would shoot him on that wall. The Wild Card is a classic old school boxing gym. The walls are covered in famous fighters photos, boxing gloves hang all along one wall…it’s classic right down to the smell that hits you when you enter…sweat and determination in equal parts. Freddie is charming and sweet and gave us Wild Card T shirts when we left. We will wear them proudly!

Andrei Arlovski

arlovski_landrymajor-6530webA week before Arlovski’s big fight with Fedor Emilianenko Fight! Magazine had me go shoot him training with Freddie Roche at the Wild Card Gym. Arlovski looks like he belongs in a medieval castle or the movie 300.  He looks like a throwback to some darker more primitive era. He was larger than life. While he wasn’t the most engaging fighter I have met…anyone who has a pit bull named Maximus is OK with me.  I did fall in love with The Wild Card Gym which is an old school boxing gym, and the characters that inhabit it.
